Tanner Foust Drove a McLaren Camera Car to Shoot a Film for Xbox One

What do you do when you have one of the fastest cars in the world at your disposal? Why, you drive it of course. But if you're really creative, you build the ultimate high-speed camera car and shoot a movie with it.

The McLaren 12C is a true powerhouse of a production car. With a top speed of 207 mph, 443 lb-ft of torque, and 625 horsepower, it wasn't built for a simple milk run to the corner store. The first McLaren-designed and built production car since its epic F1 hit the road, the 12C is packed with as much raw power as it is fine detail.

So is it any wonder that it was chosen to become this beast of a camera car? To create the high-octane video Forza FilmSpeed, Microsoft turned to driver Tanner Foust and the Phantom HD camera to bend the 12C's awesome power to their will and create the world's fastest zoetrope. A perfect marriage of speed, performance, and detail, the ultimate camera car was born.

Over a two-mile stretch of road, Foust steered the McLaren as the Phantom HD snapped photo after photo of strategically placed still images. If stable enough, the camera's speed and high performance would turn those flat images into a wild ride of a race, a perfect match to Forza Motorsport 5's gameplay on Xbox One.

The true-to-life driving experience that Forza FilmSpeed offers is a testament to the powers that make up the McLaren and the Phantom Flex. The level of detail and smooth animation of the video become ten times more impressive once you realize you're looking at a majorly souped-up zoetrope. The speed is certainly expected with this kind of machine, but it's the McLaren's stability that made for a perfect union with the Phantom HD.

Case in point: The camera mount on the 12C's engine was repurposed from a helicopter and weighed more than 100 pounds. The 12C handled it like there was nothing there. This really was the only car for the job.

The McLaren 12C and Phantom Flex combined for some breathtaking visuals. Forza Motorsport 5 and Xbox One do exactly the same. Tapping into the power of this next-gen console, Forza Motorsport 5 is as immersive a racing experience as anyone can get sitting in their living rooms. It's not just the 1080p eye-candy. It's not just the fast cars. It's the fact that you've never felt more like you're in the driver's seat. Don't believe me? Check out the video up top to see more.
